Banana Blueberry Whey Shake(Protein rich power breakfast)

Being a vegetarian, I am always for the look out for good protein sources especially for my kids. Because protein is an essential building block for the body and  growing children do need quality sources of protein in their every day meal. I plan my kids breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack in such a way that there is some protein source in each one of them. I rely on legumes, nuts, coconuts, fruits like avocado, raw unprocessed dairy for my protein sources.

Even with all this planning, morning breakfast is a real challenge. To have some thing filling, fast as well as nutritious on the go especially for the kids. I am sure lot of people who read this face the same problem as me. So I rely on protein supplements like whey protein and brown rice protein to have a power packed breakfast.  I would like to hear suggestions from you all on how you are fortifying your food with protein and what is your best suggested protein source/supplement (Of course a vegetarian source).

Preparation Time – 5 Minutes

Cooking Time – Nil

Serves – 1

Ingredients

Raw Milk – 1 Cup ( 8 oz)

Banana – 4 slices (3-4 small slices are enough otherwise you will have a thick smoothie instead of a shake)

Blueberries – Handful

Whey protein powder – 2 scoops

Xylitol – 1 Tsp or to taste

proteinsuppleents

Method

Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend till smooth and enjoy.

Note – Brown rice protein and hemp protein are vegan protein and brown rice protein tastes ok and hemp protein you have to get used to the taste. You can add few fruits, coconut milk, brown rice protein and xylitol and come up with a great smoothie. Hemp protein I find tastes better with green smoothies(non sweet) ones like spinach, yogurt, salt and lemon juice. Whey protein with raw milk and fruits tastes more like a milk shake than a protein drink and is the best tasting of all the three. But when you buy whey protein make sure the source is from grass fed organic milk, the protein is cold processed and is a whey protein concentrate and not an isolate.

I like whey protein an hour or more after a workout, but it is good for vegetarians' breakfast if it is allowed by they, or can use almond milk.
I think it is the best protein source in the morning.
A great vegetable for protein is edamame (young fresh soybeans). You could mix it with fresh peas to get kids introduced, provided they already like peas Just note that the edamame needs to cook a couple minutes more than peas. I'm not vegetarian but love edamame, use it in salads.

i agree with you protein packed breakfast is something I strive to give my kids & some ideas I play around is whole wheat toasts with peanut butter, museli with milk, scrambled eggs or sunny side-up (provided u r a eggetarian), oats cooked in soy milk and our very own adai (lentil & rice pancakes) not to mention smoothies; loved this combo of protein shake and thx for linking it to my event !

Hi Sadhana, I too was looking around for getting some good whey protein and stumbled on Dr.Mercola's. It's good to know that somebody I know is already using it. But are you sure that kids can have it too? I'm hoping that this smoothie is for adults because I don't think that kids really need so much protein (32gms for 2 scoops). Maybe be 1/2 a scoop should be fine for kids, which is around 8gms.

Thanks all for your nice comments. Hema, Anthony, Priya thanks for your suggestions.
Madhuram, the protein in take varies based on the weight and age. My elder one is in his preteen and between 12-18 is the age for maximum growth and at least 1 gm per kg of body weight is required. I make sure the morning breakfast is really protein rich because that will keep you energetic through out the day. Also he works out in the morning and 2 scoops of whey protein contains 19g of protein which I think is good enough post work out.

Wow this looks yummy. Am I correct in assuming that this whey is available in powder form in tins?
Where do you get it?

Madhuram says:
January 25, 2012 at 8:34 AM Reply

That's so true about the age and weight and having it as a post work out meal. I didn't know that you had a tween. Being a mom of a 6 year old and a 15 month old, I tend to think that all kids are that age. Silly me! Also I was seeing the label for the Original Miracle Whey, which has 32gms for 2 scoops. Thanks for the clarification Sadhana.

This kind of shake I think is the best post work out protein shake that I should get to try. It looks delicious. Banana is rich in potassium while blueberry is rich in vitamin C. Both of them can also be a good source of protein. I'm going to make my own shake soon.
